Professional Experience

  • BackWatcher, 2002 - Present

  • President
Founded this Unix/Networking company specializing in Information Security. Client projects have included firewall/VPN installation/administration, router configuration and ACL development, security auditing, penetration testing, incident forensics, remote administration, network design/implementation, system/network restructuring, system installation/upgrade, disaster recovery, disaster recovery planning, programming and general problem resolution.
  • IPDefence, 2002

  • CTO
Co-founded this Managed Firewall and VPN Services company in Canada to ensure uninfringed deployment of security services utilizing maximum strength cryptography. Responsible for architecting and managing a scalable Global Security Services Infrastructure (GSSI) comprised of Autonomically Stateful (AS) systems with Distributed Awareness (DA) and Rapid Response Agents (RRA). Our largest client was Lions Gate Entertainment.
  • Hitter Communications, 2000 - 2001

  • Senior Unix Systems and Network Administrator
Supervising a staff of 10, I was responsible for Unix and network administration of primarily FreeBSD Unix systems and Cisco networking equipment. As ARIN coordinator (KA213-ARIN), I managed the multihomed address space of Autonomous System AS12099. We provided services such as dedicated Internet connectivity, nationwide dial-up, email, web hosting and resource monitoring. Hitter Communications (subsequently acquired by EarthLink) was one of the largest ISPs in the Tampa Bay area.
  • SageMaker, 1999 - 2000

  • Senior Systems Architect
Primary responsibility for the software testing and release cycle of SageWave, the client component of the company's primary product. Additional senior level responsibilities were for Unix systems administration, WAN management, Internet security, remote access, network monitoring and DNS administration. SageMaker (subsequently acquired by Divine) was an Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) company with a focus on the oil, gas and energy industries.
  • IBM Global Services, 1997 - 1998

  • Unix Systems Administrator - Security Specialist
As a senior technician, I performed advisory and hands-on roles in network architecture, risk analysis, security policies, security auditing and intrusion detection. I also administered DNS (set up and was hostmaster to on IBM's intranet and the Internet), sendmail  (designed email architecture for IBM Content Hosting Services), firewalls (designed and configured firewalls for both IBM internal and commercial use), Cisco routers  (wrote and maintained the security ACLs for IBM Content Hosting Services as well as commercial customers)  and webservers (designed secure server and electronic commerce systems for both IBM internal and commercial accounts). I also administered an experimental streaming video distribution system at Thomas J. Watson Research Center. Additionally, I provided fourth level technical support (and there are officially only three) as needed.
  • Jabil Circuit, 1995 - 1997

  • Corporate Unix Systems Administrator
Primary systems/network responsibility for multi-vendor Unices across a heterogeneous, international WAN. Duties consisted of research, development, implementation, policies, documentation and highest level technical support for the local IT departments of seven manufacturing facilities worldwide. Sole responsibility for design and administration of firewalls, both Internet and Extranet. Jabil is the third largest contract manufacturer of circuit board assemblies in the world, manufacturing, among other things, most of Cisco's product.
  • Advantis - IBM Global Network, 1995

  • Systems Engineer
Contracted on the 1NET project, integrating the two distinct SNA networks, Advantis North (Sears heritage) and Advantis South (IBM heritage) into the world's largest single SNA network. Technical support role for larger, dual-attached customers with emphasis on load-balancing, traffic-splitting and APPN/LEN connectivity.
  • Cue & Case Connection, 1995 - 2000

  • Sole Proprietor
An e-commerce billiard supply store with secure online credit card transactions beginning in June of 1996. I designed, built, and configured the website as an e-commerce proof of concept at a time when credit card processing companies were saying it couldn't be done. It was the first billiard supply outlet on the Internet and the first to offer secure online ordering as well. Revenues were still close to doubling each year at the time of it's sale.
